HCM City dominate at junior age swimming event

HCM City's Tran Duy Khoi won three gold medals in the first day of competition at the ongoing National Junior Age-Groups Swimming Championships in Ha Noi on May 17.

In the boys' 16-18, Khoi brought home gold medals in the 50m breast stroke, 200m medley and 400m relay.

In the girls' 14-15, Nguyen Diep Phuong Tram of HCM City took gold in the 200m medley and 100m butterfly.

HCM City's swimmers had trained during long-term training sessions in China before heading to Ha Noi for the event.

The event will finish on May 20 with the awarding of 102 sets of medals.

Tai wins 400m drag race

Dong Quoc Tai won the first-ever 400m drag race in Cau Tram Industrial Zone in Long An Province on May 17.

Tai, of HCM City's Binh Tan, took the lead in the professional 125 cc YaZ event, while Vo Phuoc Son of HCM City's Go Vap won the Suzuki Raider 125cc event.

Eighty-eight racers competed in the two-day event organised by the Viet Nam Cycling and Motor Sport Federation and the provincial department of culture, sports and tourism.

The event drew more than 10,000 fans.

Nhan, Mai win bronze medals at Taiwan event

Vietnamese track-and-field athletes won two bronze medals at the Taiwan Open Athletic Championships, which wrapped up in Taipei Municipal Stadium on May 16.

Nguyen Thi Truc Mai finished third in the women's long jump with a jump of 6.06m.

Former Asian champion Marestella Torres of the Philippines jumped 6.53m, the second best jump in Asia in 2015, to win a gold medal. Wan Ju Wen of Chinese Taipei edged out Mai to finish in second place with 6.07m.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Thanh Nhan took third place with 2.10m in the men's high jump. Hsiang Chun-Hsieng of Chinese Taipei won a gold medal when he cleared 2.25m and Seong Mo Kang of South Korea finished in second place with 2.13m.

Chiaying Lin of Chinese Taipei won the women's shot put event with a throw of 16.44m.

In the men's 4x100m relay final, the Chinese Taipei team beat the Asian champion Hong Kong team with a performance of 39.26 seconds, second fastest in Asia in 2015. Meanwhile, Hong Kong settled for second place with a score of 39.44 and Indonesia finished in a close third with 39.47 seconds.

The two-day event provided a good opportunity for Vietnamese athletes to sharpen their skills and gain valuable experience in preparation for the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore next month.

HCM City schools qualify for footy fest

Hoa Lu and Nguyen Thi Dinh, the two schools representing HCM City, are the last participants to compete at the first football festival for U13 students from all over the country.

Hoa Lu beat Nguyen Van To 8-7 in a penalty shootout yesterday, after the two sides drew 2-2 in the semi-final match of HCM City qualifiers that lured 16 teams to compete, following a 7-a-side rule in 25 minutes each half.

In another match, Nguyen Thi Dinh won 13-1 over Hoang Van Thu.

The two teams will join 10 other teams, who advanced from five other qualifications, in the final on June 3-7 in Ha Noi.

A team of top players will be selected to tour Japan.

The festival, co-organised by Yamaha Motor Viet Nam, the Thieu Nien Tien Phong (Young Pioneers) newspaper, and The Thao 24h Joinstock Company, is part of a programme titled: For the Future of Viet Nam Football.

According to the organisers, the tournament is aimed at not just discovering football talents but also guide students by providing them with training, personality as well as team building exercises, and fair-play competing activities.

Tuan wins eighth stage in cycling

Do Phuoc Tuan of Gao Hat Ngoc Troi An Giang finished first in the eighth stage of the Return to the Countryside cycling tournament yesterday, May 17.

Tuan took the 77km stage from Kien Tuong Town in Long An Province to Hong Ngu District in Dong Thap Province with 2hr 01.40min.

Tran Nguyen Duy Nhan of Military Zone 7 and Nguyen Minh Thien of Vinh Long came second and third, respectively.

Finishing in a crowd two seconds after the stage winner, Nguyen Hoang Giang of Gao Hat Ngoc Troi An Giang emerged as the tour leader with a total time of 19:04.28.

He is followed by Phan Tuan Vu of Can Tho and his teammate Pham Minh Triet.

After eight stages, Gao Hat Ngoc Troi An Giang are on top of the team ranking, followed by An Giang Plant Protection and Vinh Long.

The 95km final stage will be held today from Chau Doc City to Long Xuyen City.
