Eleven people were injured after an apparent drunk driver of a runaway Audi rammed two parked cars at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City.

The vehicle came to a complete rest only after it collided with a billboard. There have been no initial reports of fatalities.

According to preliminary reports the intoxicated driver failed to set the hand brake while the car was running and he was loading luggage. When the vehicle started rolling he returned to the wheel but stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake causing it to accelerate out of control.

At this stage all of the details are unclear, however law enforcement officials have arrested the driver of the Audi identified as, Nguyen Duy Tan, 25, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Rescue paramedics arrived and after a quick assessment it was established that 11 people had sustained various injuries ranging from minor to serious. They were immediately rushed to Thong Nhat, 115, 7A, Paediatrics 1 and An Binh hospitals.

Dang Tuan Tu, Tan Son Nhat international airport director, said the airport will assist the victims in any way they can and it is providing them with VND3 million each to help defray costs.
