VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City's Department of Transport has completed a study on using electric taxis cars on a number of downtown streets and proposed pedestrian-only streets to protect the environment.
The study, on the advantages and disadvantages of using the electric cars, will soon be submitted to the People's Committee, and is expected to be implemented by early next year.
The department has also instructed the Saigon Transportation Mechanical Corporation (SAMCO) to study and obtain technologies to manufacture and assemble electric cars in the country.
It also considered electric buses before choosing the taxis because of the convenience involved.
They will be used on streets located in the downtown area and parked outside tourist sites, museums, hotels, and restaurants to serve tourists.
The roads designated for their operation now are Hai Ba Trung, Ton Duc Thang, Ham Nghi, Pham Ngu Lao, Nguyen Thi Nghia, Cach Mang Thang Tam, and Dien Bien Phu in Districts 1 and 3.
The others being considered are Bui Vien, Pham Ngu Lao, De Tham, and Le Duan.
If the project is approved, the department will raise funds for it from various sources, offering incentives on a trial basis to attract investors.
Domestic manufacturers and importers of the vehicles will also get tax breaks.
Ha Noi uses electric cars for tours of the old quarter and West Lake.
In Da Nang, the first electric car began plying in March 2012.
