From this amount, VND144 billion (US$6.6 million) will be granted to 24 districts for upgrading roads, while VND126 billion (US$5.7 million) will go to the city's road maintenance fund. One-tenth of the collected fee will be paid to local authorities for organising the collection.

In a recently issued decision, the committee said that below 100cc motorcycles will have to pay VND50,000 (US$2.3) per year; while between 100cc and 175cc motorcycles should pay VND100,000 ($4.6); and above 175cc motorcycles shall pay VND150,000 ($6.8).

The users of motorised vehicles (excluding electric motorbikes) that are registered in HCM City or other localities but operate in the city will have to pay a road maintenance fee from July this year.

Police, defence forces, and households classified as poor are exempt from the fee.

Over 6 million vehicles are registered in the city, according to the HCM City Transport Department.
