HCM City’s authorities have reduced tuition fees for children in nursery and secondary schools for the 2018-2019 school year.
HCM City reduces school fees for local public schools
On February 14, the Department of Education in HCM City issued guidelines on how to implement Resolution 25 which was issued in December 2018 on school fee adjustments for nursery and secondary public schools.
Starting from the second semester, nursery children in 19 districts in HCM City will enjoy new tuition of VND200,000 (USD8.6) per child per month. The monthly tuition for children in five suburb districts is lower at VND120,000 per child. Monthly tuition for continuing education secondary schools is VND60,000 and VND30,000 for inner and suburb districts.
The city authorities will provide a subsidy of over VND150bn (USD6.5m) annually to implement the programme.
Last year, the Department of Education proposed to exempt tuition for all secondary pupils in HCM City. However, the Ministry of Finance rejected the proposal, saying that it must be approved by the National Assembly and be included in the Education Law.
The local authorities then decided to lower school fees and gained approval from the HCM City People's Council last December while waiting for the National Assembly to review the tuition exemption plan.
