The city has 40 erosion-prone areas in several districts, including Nha Be and Thu Duc districts.

Nha Be District has 16 eroded areas, the highest number compared to other districts.

The municipal People’s Committee has approved the construction of 17 embankment projects totalling 7.44 km long to prevent further erosion in the 16 areas.

Of the 17 projects, the city’s Inland Waterway Region has invested in 13 projects, while the Nha Be District Construction Investment Project Management Board has invested in four projects.

However, land clearance is a problem for construction, according to Tran Van Giau, director of the city’s Inland Waterway Region.

The waterway agency is reviewing each project and working with local authorities to speed up the relocation of households in erosion-prone areas to safe areas.

The agency targets completion of land clearance next month and construction of eight projects by the end of this year.

The Nha Be District Construction Investment Project Management Board also plans to complete four projects by the end of this year.

According to the city’s Department of Transport, of the city’s 40 erosion-prone areas, two erosion-prone areas have a large number of households.

One erosion-prone area is on the left bank of the Sai Gon River near Fatima Church in Thu Duc District’s Hiep Binh Chanh Ward and the other is on the left bank of Long Kieng Bridge’s upstream area in Nha Be District’s Phuoc Kieng Commune.

In the erosion-prone area on the left bank of the Sai Gon River near Fatima Church, there are 42 houses facing the threat of erosion.

Of the houses, 13 were built above the river surface, 14 were built half on the river surface and half on the river bank, and 15 in the river’s safety corridors.

The city’s Department of Transport in cooperation with agencies has reviewed two erosion-prone areas and petitioned the People’s Committee to build embankments in the areas.
