Tourists relax at a resort in HCMC’s District 9.

The HCMC government had a meeting with relevant agencies on Monday to discuss plans to promote river tourism in a move to make it typical of the city’s hospitality industry.

Nguyen Viet Anh, head of the travel division under the HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said the city would strongly promote its river tourism on mass media.

Many activities such as lantern releasing and boat racing in Ben Nghe Canal will be organized. Besides, publications about river tourism will be introduced widely at international travel fairs next year.

“The number of river tourists has now increased much with tours operated daily. The city is also accelerating construction of piers and wharves,” Anh said.

The list of 31 piers and wharves as well as technical requirements and services will be released publicly to call for investments, mainly from private investors. The first eight piers and wharves invested by the State are expected to be finished next June.

HCMC officially introduced seven river tours in June. Among these, tours attracting a high number of tourists are the ones departing for Cu Chi and Can Gio.
