The number of waste depots in the city will total 40 by 2025, and 36 by 2035, according to the city’s long-term plan.

The city will build 22 new inter-district waste depots in districts 2, 8, Binh Tan, Nha Be, Cu Chi, and 17 depots in districts 2, 5, 8, 9, 12, Binh Tan, Cu Chi and Nha Be.

Between 2025 and 2050, the city will continue to reduce the number of waste depots in inner districts and increase locations in outlying areas.

The six waste depots that will suspend operations will be used for other purposes. They are Binh Trung Tay (District 2), Ba Lai (District 6), Tan Hoa (District 11), Nguyen Kiem (Phu Nhuan District), Ba Diem (Hoc Mon District), and Tan An Hoi (Cu Chi District).

Thirty-four depots to be enlarged and upgraded before 2025 will continue to operate, while two other large waste depots will be built at the Northwest Waste Treatment Complex (Cu Chi District) and Da Phuoc Solid Waste Treatment Complex (Binh Chanh District).

Investment

Under the city’s plan, the waste depots must meet environmental conditions, including locations away from residential areas. Waste water treatment facilities must be included, and bad odours, noise and dust must be prevented.

Inner-city waste depots must cover areas of at least 5,000 to 10,000sq.m each. They will be allowed to receive household waste until 2025.

They can sort and store household, healthcare and other waste, as required by state regulations, while meeting environmental and technical criteria set by agencies.

The city’s People’s Committee has told district authorities to map out projects to build waste depots in their areas, with priority given to investment from the private sector.

If the waste depot projects cannot attract investment from the private sector, the People’s Committees of districts will then map out projects, using funds from the State budget in accordance with current regulations.

The proposals will be sent to the city’s People’s Committee via the Department of Planning and Investment.

The nine waste depots to be suspended include Tu So Depot (District 7), the Electrical Cabin Depot (District 8), Long Hoa Depot (District 9), Phuoc Long A Depot (District 9), Tan Thoi Hiep Depot (District 12), Hiep Thanh Depot (District 12), Hiep Binh Chanh Depot (Thu Duc District), Tan Thoi Nhi Depot (Hoc Mon District), and Binh Khanh Depot (Can Gio District).
