Director Bui Xuan Cuong said the department had collaborated with technology firms to integrate the HCM City Traffic Portal with the Zalo app.
They can find information about traffic flow, roadblocks, accidents, traffic congestion and current traffic via live images captured by 700 traffic cameras.
To enhance interactions, the Sai Gon River Tunnel Management Centre has added another function to Zalo, which can virtually assist locals in conveniently finding information.
According to the Transport Department, integration of the HCM City Traffic Portal with Zalo was one of a number of projects that aim to build HCM City into a smart urban area between 2017 and 2020, with a vision to 2025.
This also serves as a new and efficient channel that fosters communication between locals and relevant authorities.
The HCM City Traffic Portal, which is available on both website and mobile application platforms, was put into use in January last year and has attracted nearly 2.3 million visits.
In addition to traffic updates, the portal provides locals with information on available parking lots, public toilets, gas stations, construction sites, and roadmaps, among others.
