HCM City People's Committee has proposed to build an international standard VND1.5trn (USD64m) theatre in District 2.
The Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon Opera House
The theatre would be used for ballet, symphony and opera performances and play a key role in promoting the city’s cultural life.
It will have a large auditorium capable of seating 1,200 and a smaller 500 capacity room. The Department of Culture and Sports will be the investor. Land on Le Duan Street will be auctioned and the money used to build the theatre.
According to the people's committee, they want to build a modern and major construction that is fitting for HCM City. They hope to have a theatre with new technology for international performances. The theatre would mean improved cultural events.
During the French colonial era, HCM City had three theatres including the Saigon Opera House, Philharmonie Theatre which was turned into the State Treasury and the HCM City Conservatory of Music. Only Saigon Opera House which is built in 1898 with 500 seats is still maintained. According to HCM City People's Committee, building a new theatre is necessary and urgent for a top-tier city.
If the HCM City People's Council approves the project, construction could start later this year and complete in December 2022.
