The information was released by Mr. Nguyen Hanh Phuc, Chairman of the National Assembly Office, during the break of this morning meeting, October 25.

Before the opening session, the NA Delegation of Ho Chi Minh City and the NA Committee for Deputy Affairs received Tam’s application for his absence from the 4th NA session, for health reasons.

The NA Delegation of Ho Chi Minh City sent a request to the NA.

In the morning of October 22, NA Chair Nguyen Sinh Hung received Tam’s application for his absence from the 4th NA session to go overseas for medical treatment but Tam did not specify in what country.

"The NA Chairman has approved deputy Tam’s absence. In principle, there is no reason for disagreement," Phuc said.

Phuc added that Tam’s petition for absence is legal. However, "As a representative of the people, you must attend NA meetings. If you are absent, you could not perform your duties and the voters will judge you. If a deputy is absent for a long time, the local Fatherland Front Committee can assess whether the deputy is still worthy of the trust of the voters or not," Phuc said.

He also said that there is no rule on the absence of a deputy for an entire NA session. Only the NA Chair has the rights to decide similar cases like Mr. Dang Thanh Tam.

Besides Tam, a female deputy of Son La province is also absent from the session for maternity leave.

Deputy Dang Thanh Tam is younger brother of deputy Dang Thi Hoang Yen, who was dismissed from the NA in the previous session.

Tam is a well-known businessman, who was ranked as one of the richest people in the Vietnamese stock market from 2007 to 2010.
