Minh was formerly director of the HCMC Tax Department.
His arrest comes as the police are broadening an investigation into violations of regulations on the management and use of State assets causing losses, lack of responsibility leading to severe consequences, accepting and giving bribes, which was discovered at Xuyen Viet Oil Travel and Transport Trading Co., Ltd and some agencies.
The police at the Ministry of Public Security searched Minh’s residence today, December 19.
Also involved in this case is Le Duc Tho, former Party secretary of Ben Tre Province, who was detained last week on alleged charges of abusing his position and power to influence others for personal gains, according to Article 358 of the Penal Code.
In September this year, the police pressed charges against Mai Thi Hong Hanh, born in 1979, and Nguyen Thi Nhu Phuong, born in 1992, who were director and deputy director at Xuyen Viet Oil, one of the 40 major petroleum trading firms in the nation.
The results from the investigation in 2022 showed that Xuyen Viet Oil committed multiple violations in fuel business, including failure to meet the requirements for the distribution system of petroleum products.
Xuyen Viet Oil’s purchase of petroleum products from its subsidiary violated Decree 83/2014 on petroleum business. Additionally, the company failed to engage in the export, import, and transshipment of fuels, as well as neglected to supervise its agent network.
