The news was announced by the office of the Party Committee after a meeting on September 6 between Thang and the operator of the Da Phuoc integrated waste management facility. At the meeting, Thang said the ill smell from sludge treatment plants was insignificant.

In previous years, odor often spread in July-September in the southern districts of Binh Chanh, Nha Be and 7 but the situation has worsened this year, affecting the wellbeing of many people there.

Thang ordered the operator of Da Phuoc to adopt technical solutions to the waste treatment process to minimize the spread of odor. In the long term, the complex needs to plant more trees, improve technology and limit garbage burial.

Construction of a modern waste treatment plant in Long An Province should be accelerated as well.

Thang also told the HCMC Department of Environment and Natural Resources to monitor, collect and analyze data to locate sources of odor and work with Da Phuoc over the possibility of adjusting hours of garbage classification and recycling systems.

Nguyen Toan Thang, director of the department, told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting on environmental issues in HCMC last week that all information about the odor would be given this week.

He told the Daily on September 21 that the department has reported to the HCMC government about the cause of the odor and the city government office is expected to announce the issue at the city’s upcoming meeting on socio-economic performance in the first nine months.
