The pilot program will be executed in eight motorcycle maintenance stations in the three districts. The agencies will collect emissions samples for analysis and assess their impacts on the environment, the local media reported.

Tran Quang Lam, director of the municipal Department of Transport, said the motorcycle emissions inspections will be conducted based on a voluntary basis among residents to raise their awareness about the impact of motorcycle emissions on the environment.

Also, the department will develop a roadmap to conduct the inspections citywide and submit it to the municipal government for approval, Lam added.

Last year, the department asked the Ministry of Transport for permission to pilot emissions tests on motorcycles in the city. The ministry threw its support behind the proposal, but said that it was also necessary to amend the Law on Road Traffic.

HCMC currently has nearly 7.9 million vehicles, including more than 730,000 autos and 7.15 million motorcycles. Of the total vehicles in the city, motorcycles consume half of the gasoline volume, but release 94% of all hydrocarbons, 87% of carbon monoxide, 57% of oxides of nitrogen and 33% of coarse dust particles.
