Head coach of the Vietnam national football team Kim Sang-sik.

His contract with the VFF, to be signed on the same day, will last for two years, from May 2024 to March 2026.

During his working term, the 48-year-old coach will be assisted by 12 people, including three Korean assistants.

Kim is entering negotiations to complete the coaching crew, with Korean assistant Choi Won-kwon to be the first choice.

The head coach arrived at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on May 5 and rushed to Hang Day stadium to watch a V-League football match.

Vietnam will play two last matches of the second qualifying round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Philippines on June 6 and Iraq six days later.

Vietnam have little chance to enter the third qualifying round, therefore their immediate goal will be the 2024 ASEAN Cup – Mitsubishi Electric Cup in late November and the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup in March 2025.

Kim was chosen following Philippe Troussier’s departure in last March. Under the French coach’s reign Vietnamese football fell into its worst slump. They suffered 10 losses out of 11 matches, including seven consecutive losses in official matches. Vietnam also dropped out of the top 100 on the FIFA rankings.
