The surveys will ask patients about access to doctors and facilities, provision of information about tests and ultrasound before birth and complications during and after birth, facilities, and health staff’s attitude and capability.

They will also focus on communication and guidance for mothers to breastfeed their infants at these facilities. Health workers are banned from suggesting the use of alternatives to replace breast milk.

The Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children said that it is piloting the survey.

Speaking at a conference on providing guidance and collecting opinions for the surveys in HCM City on Thursday, Assoc Prof Dr Luong Ngoc Khue, the department’s head, said the surveys are vital to helping hospitals address their shortcomings and improve management and quality.

“Obstetrics and paediatrics hospitals have been sued by patients. The ministry and relevant agencies have helped resolve many cases.”

The surveys would help them avoid the issues the lead to law suits and also help improve their reputation and brand name to attract more patients, he said.

At obstetrics and paediatrics hospitals and wards, communication about breastfeeding is vital because of the many benefits it brings both mothers and babies, he added.

Do Hong Phuong of UNICEF said the surveys should be a permanent feature so that healthcare service providers know their shortcomings and find solutions.

It is very important that hospital administrations ensure nutrition and breastfeeding are given priority, he added.
