Dr Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, Head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Anesthesia and Resuscitation Unit under HCM City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, on August 31 informed the public that the patient had recovered rapidly.

“Before the surgery, the patient had severe heart failure. After receiving the priceless gift of a new, healthy heart from a man in Hanoi, the patient recovered faster than expected," Thuy said.

Prior to that, L.A.H, 37, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 2021. At that time, the contractile function of the cardiac muscle was only 18 percent. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he could not go to see the doctor and access accurate diagnostic tools.

In July 2023, when symptoms of heart failure became more serious, he came for a medical examination at the HCM City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Doctors then discovered that his situation was severe and that his blood type was Rh negative, a rare blood type.

After a period of treatment, his situation improved. He was also added to the waiting list for a heart transplantation. At noon on August 24, he was told to be hospitalized immediately to have the operation.

The heart used was from a 32-year-old man in Hanoi. The heart from the donor was carried to HCM City with the support of many people, including donor’s family, surgeons, and air carrier, the police and local authorities. 

Surgeons struggled every minute to save the man. And the new heart now beats safely and strongly.

After the transplant operation, the patient needed one day of special care. On the second day, the patient could sit and stand up. On the fifth day, he could eat porridge and communicate with people.

"I want to express my gratitude from the bottom of my heart for the noble gesture of the donor's family. They have given me a new life. Now, I want to run and go home," H said.

Currently, L.A.H is still receiving post-operation care at the hospital.

As VietNamNet reported, on August 22, Saint Paul Hospital in Hanoi received N.D.T, 32, who was hospitalized in critical situation after a serious traffic accident.

After clinical examinations and assessments, on the afternoon of August 24, leading experts concluded that the patient was brain dead. 

T’s heart was carried to HCM City, while T's liver, kidneys, and corneas were transplanted to other patients at Viet Duc Hospital, Saint Paul Hospital, and 108 Central Military Hospital.
