The landslides made the North-South rail route from section Km354+900 to section Km355+400 of Duc Lien commune of Vu Quang district impassable on October 30 morning, said Le Van Hung, chairman of the Duc Lien commune administration.
The North-South express trains were forced to halt at Hoa Duyet and Yen Hue railway stations, and passengers were then transported by car through the landslide area, he added.
The railway industry dispatched workers to deal with the incident.
Overnight heavy rain impacted by a cold air wave caused water levels of local rivers, streams and dams to swell up, flooding parts of Ha Tinh province.
Floodwaters submerged bridges and roads, including a section of Ho Chi Minh Trail in Huong Binh commune of Huong Khe district, making them impassable.
An official of Huong Khe district said authorities deployed forces to assist thousands of students to go home for safety reasons.
Heavy rain is expected to batter Ha Tinh province in a couple of days that may cause severe flooding and flash floods in the locality, according to the weather forecast bulletin.
