At noon, December 23, the scheduled day of blackout, Le Thi Hong Chi hang up a hammock between two big trees for her 1-year-old son, Dang Tan Dat, to sleep on. Because of strong wind, a wasps’ nest fell down near the hammock.

Seeing bees sting Dat, the baby’s sister Dang Ngoc Thanh Tam, 3.5 years old, ran to the hammock to embrace and cover the baby from bees. Tam got 46 bee stings on her face and body. She was dead on the way to hospital.

Dat, with nearly 30 bee stings, was brought to HCM City’s Cho Ray hospital for treatment. The baby has overcome critical conditions.

The mother – Hong Chi – said she returned home only five minutes after hanging the hammock and saw bees swarming over the two babies. She jumped down from her motorbike to rescue the kids. At that time, Tam was holding Dat in her arms while shouting “Run, Dat”, ignoring bees.

“I held my babies in one hand and picked bees on Tam’s hairs by the other hand. Tam did not complain just a single word. She only said ‘Mum, bees beat me and Dat. Save Dat, please.’ I and my children ran for around 10m and bees stopped chasing us,” Chi talked in tears.

Tam is Chi’s second child.

The family had known about the wasp’s net on the tree for several months but they did not remove it.
