A humanoid robot built by two high school students in Ninh Binh has drawn widespread attention at the province’s recent STEM and science-technology showcase.
The event featured more than 460 entries from local secondary schools, with many focusing on real-world applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The humanoid robot built by high school students in Ninh Binh can recognize faces and perform lifelike hand movements.
The humanoid robot was created by Nguyen Tran Duc Luong and Nguyen Dinh Kien from Nguyen Khuyen High School B. Standing 1.3 meters tall and powered by a battery that lasts 8–10 hours, the robot was the result of 12 months of dedicated research, design, and assembly. The total cost of production reached 65 million VND (approximately USD 2,600).
From concept to interaction: A human-like machine built by teens
Unlike theoretical models, the students’ robot features realistic capabilities, including facial recognition and flexible arm movements. It was designed to interact directly with users or operate within smart production environments - offering potential uses in customer service and automated factory lines.
Accompanying the project was a second standout entry in the security category: the "GuardDog Robot AI," designed by Phan Duc Manh and Nguyen Ngoc Khanh from Nguyen Hue High School B. Developed over just three months with a budget of 16 million VND (around USD 640), this robot integrates AI-powered cameras and sensors for gas and temperature to detect fires and hazards in home settings.
The robotic dog was developed to assist the elderly and enhance household security. It moves autonomously, analyzes environmental data, and responds to voice commands - making it a promising solution for smart home applications.

From passive learning to digital innovation
According to the event organizers, the competition reflects a clear shift in Vietnam’s education sector - from passive theoretical learning toward hands-on digital innovation. Many student projects at this year’s event aimed to address practical challenges in agriculture, safety, and e-commerce using AI and IoT tools.
This transformation in mindset and execution aligns with national goals to foster digital literacy and technological creativity among younger generations.
