wedding anniversary.
Hong, a worker, from Lac Trung Street, Hanoi, who is about to get married, told
VietNamNet that she and her fiancé thought very carefully and decided to buy a
pair of wedding rings and hire a gold necklace and a gold bracelet as marriage
portions of the two families.
“We have to buy the wedding rings, otherwise we would have nothing to exchange
at the wedding anniversary,” Hong said.
Hong and Lan are among many young people who went to jewelry shops in Hanoi to
hire wedding jewelry.
This year, this service has been booming. A staff at a jewelry shop in Tran Khat
Chan Street, Hanoi, said since mid-October, when the gold price has been
continuously increasing, hundreds of couples have hired jewelries at his shop
He said the leasing prices range between VND500,000 and VND2 million for a set
of, including a bracelet, a necklace and a pair of ear-rings, for 2-3 days.

However, things don’t always go smoothly.
A family in Cau Giay district, Hanoi, hired a dozen of gold necklaces for their
relatives to wear at their daughter’s wedding ceremony. However, the relatives
who are old women from the rural areas thought that the necklaces are fake
jewelry so after the wedding ceremony, they took off the necklaces and put them
right on the tables. The bride’s mother burst into tears after the wedding
because seven necklaces had disappeared, with the value equivalent to seven
taels of gold.
