Chairman Mai affirmed that the city will direct its local healthcare sector and associated agencies to closely collaborate with the National Coordination Center for Organ Transplantation.
The goal is to implement effective, synchronized efforts in promoting and facilitating organ donation and transplantation.
The city also pledged substantial investments in infrastructure and equipment to support these activities.
Policies will be explored to recognize and honor individuals and organizations with outstanding achievements in organ donation, fostering a competitive and widespread movement.
Milestones in organ transplantation
Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan highlighted that organ transplantation in Vietnam has made remarkable progress.
Since the first successful transplant in 1992, Vietnam has performed 9,297 transplants.
In 2024 alone, 1,000 transplants were conducted, marking a significant milestone in the country's medical advancements.
Currently, 28 hospitals nationwide are qualified and licensed to perform organ transplants.
Vietnam’s medical technologies and techniques in this field are now comparable to those of countries with advanced healthcare systems.
Minister Lan emphasized the recent successes in complex surgeries, such as lung and simultaneous heart-liver transplants, which demonstrate Vietnam’s growing mastery of advanced medical techniques.
These breakthroughs reaffirm the country’s position on the global medical map.
Proposals to promote organ donation
At the event, the Health Minister suggested several initiatives to enhance organ donation in Vietnam.
The Ministry proposed May 20 as National Organ Donation Day, commemorating the launch of the first organ and tissue donation campaign, "Giving Is Forever," held in Hanoi.
Hospitals are encouraged to actively identify brain death cases, counsel families about organ and tissue donation, and integrate brain death diagnosis and donor coordination into routine operations.
The Ministry of Health is also working on legislative amendments to the laws on organ and body donation, aiming to align them with contemporary demands. These changes are expected to be proposed to the National Assembly in 2025.
