On the morning of August 26th, more than 1.7 million students across various levels - elementary, middle, high school, and continuing education - returned to school in Ho Chi Minh City for the 2024-2025 academic year, following a nearly three-month summer break.

At Lam Son Elementary School in Binh Thanh District, parents and students began arriving early, with many gathering in the school courtyard by 7am, ready to line up and enter their classrooms. The schoolyard buzzed with excitement as students eagerly reunited with friends they hadn’t seen since the previous school year.

For first-grade students, the school year had already begun on August 19th, allowing them to acclimate to their new environment before the official start of classes.

For many families, like that of young Kha Y, the return to school was a mix of joy and slight nervousness. "We woke up very early to prepare for today," Kha Y’s family shared. The student was excited to be back, looking forward to seeing teachers and reconnecting with friends.

Throughout the first week, students will engage in activities designed to help them adjust to school routines, learn about new regulations, and explore the various clubs and extracurricular activities available.

Middle and high school students also returned to their campuses this morning. At Nguyen Van To Middle School in District 10, sixth-grade students gathered with a sense of anticipation for the year ahead.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the city’s student population for the 2024-2025 academic year stands at 1,707,220 - a rise of 24,097 students compared to the previous year. The elementary level accounts for the largest share of students, with approximately 626,513 enrolled. However, this represents a decrease of 6,185 students compared to the 2023-2024 academic year.

The theme for Ho Chi Minh City’s education sector this academic year is “Discipline, Responsibility, Innovation, and Digital Transformation to Enhance the Quality of Education and Training in Ho Chi Minh City.”
