Tran Anh Tu, vice president of the VFF, highly appreciated Tuan's ability and experience as a coach who has trained several generations of young players.
He expressed hope that with impressive achievements in training young players, the Vietnamese coach will be able to fulfil the assigned tasks at the upcoming AFC U23 Asian Cup in Qatar.
Tuan was in charge of selecting and coaching national youth teams under a contract signed with the VFF back in 2022, leading the U20 Vietnam squad through the qualifying round to the 2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup finals in Uzbekistan in May, 2023.
Last August, he led the Vietnam’s U23 side to victory at the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship for the second time in Thailand.
Under Tuan’s tutelage, Vietnam’s U19 team made the top four of the 2016 AFC U-19 Championship, alongside the likes of Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Saudi Arabia. In addition, they represented Asia at the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup finals.
As scheduled, the U23 team will gather in Hanoi for training on April 5. They will then fly to Qatar on April 8 and take part in a friendly match against Jordan’s U23s on April 10.
At the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup finals slated for April 15 to May 3 in Qatar, Vietnam will play in Group D alongside Uzbekistan, Kuwait, and Malaysia.
The biennial championship organised by the AFC will act as qualifiers for the 2024 Summer Olympics men’s football tournament. The top three teams from the competition will go on to qualify for the Olympics in France as the AFC representatives.
