According to Chairman Cao Khoa of the Quang Ngai provincial People’s Committee, the museum will be built at the foot of Mount Thoi Loi in An Hai Commune at an estimated total cost of VND 140 billion (US$6.5 million).

The project is a key part of the effort to raise the people’s awareness of the significance of the country’s sea and islands—Truong Sa and Hoang Sa Archipelagos in particular—and of the responsibility to protect the nation’s sovereignty over its sea and islands, Khoa added.

Ly Son is home to around ten provincial and national historical sites. In particular, “Le khao le the linh Hoang Sa” (The Feast and Commemoration Festival for Hoang Sa Soldiers) and the An Vinh communal temple have recently been recognised as National Intangible Heritage and a national historical site, respectively.

The Government Office has proposed that the Prime Minister instruct the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to include the Hoang Sa, Truong Sa Historical Museum in the Vietnam Museum Plan for 2020. The Quang Ngai provincial People’s Committee is also working closely with relevant ministries and sectors to complete the project on schedule.
