Hoang, from Quang Binh, won a gold medal and set a new record in the men’s 800m freestyle with a time of 8:05.55, beating the old record of 8:11.64 set by Tran Tan Trieu last year.

Tran Huu Kim Son, who broke the Southeast Asian Games record in the men’s 400m-medley competition, also broke the national record in this category with a time of 8:11.02 but he only won a silver medal.

Earlier, Hoang broke national records in the 1,500m freestyle and 400m freestyle events.

On the penultimate day, Lam Quang Nhat, Tran Duy Khoi, Vu Thi Phuong Anh and Le Do Ngoc Quyen of HCM City clocked a time of 8:10.68 in the mixed 4x200m freestyle relay to beat the old record of 8:16.53.

Besides, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien won more golds in the women’s 50m backstroke, 200m breaststroke and 800m freestyle to help her team, the Military team, win a total of 13 golds, nine silvers and six bronzes to take the lead.

The hosts, HCM City, were the runners-up with eight golds, four silvers and nine bronzes. An Giang ranked third with five golds, four silvers and one bronze.
