On July 10, Duc Tuan posted a photo series titled "Hoi An - Mysterious Ancient Town" on his personal social media page. In some of the photos, he is seen wearing a traditional Ao Dai while standing and sitting on the roof of a building in Hoi An’s ancient town.
These photos quickly garnered attention online. While some praised the aesthetic of the photo series, the majority of comments expressed anger and criticism over the singer’s actions on the rooftop of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
"Being a public figure with education and awareness, how could he do such a thing on a heritage site? One must consider the impact of their actions," read one comment. Another remarked, "You might sing well, but your cultural knowledge is seriously lacking."
Residents of Hoi An who cherish the ancient town also voiced their opposition. One local demanded that the singer respect the historical heritage, which locals protect and maintain daily. In response, Duc Tuan explained, "Not all houses in the ancient town are heritage sites. The roof I stood on is not an ancient house but a structure built for photo-taking purposes. I will look into this matter further. Sincerely."
Nguyen Van Lanh, Vice Chairman of the Hoi An People's Committee, stated that Duc Tuan's behavior is unacceptable. He emphasized that even for an ordinary person, standing on the roof is inappropriate, and more so for a world heritage site, making it a violation of heritage laws.
Vice Chairman Lanh added that all houses in Hoi An’s ancient town are part of the architectural ensemble of the world heritage site. Hence, Duc Tuan's claim that "this is not an ancient house and was built for photos" is not justifiable. He urged the singer to reconsider his actions and avoid repeating such behavior anywhere, not just in Hoi An.
On the afternoon of July 11, Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Quang Nam Province, confirmed that they are aware of the incident involving singer Duc Tuan's photo shoot.
"We have discussed the matter with officials of Hoi An. Once the investigation is complete, the People's Committee of Hoi An will report the findings to the province," said Director Hong.
"If it is confirmed that singer Duc Tuan walked on the yin-yang roof tiles within the protected area of Hoi An’s ancient town to take photos, strict measures will be taken to set an example. Authorities are currently investigating, including the responsibility of the house owner," Director Hong stated.
After facing public criticism for posting photos of himself sitting and standing on the roof of a house in Hoi An, Duc Tuan removed the images from his Facebook page on July 11.
