On July 10, Y Nhieu, 23, hailing from Dak Glei District in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum, came home unrecognisable to her mother after four years working as a housemaid in neighbouring Gia Lai province. She was covered in bruises, cuts and burns and was later admitted to hospital.

According to the doctor treating Nhieu, she sustained multiple injuries and inflammation to her chest, stomach, ears and left hand.

According to Y Nhieu, she left for Gia Lai to find a job in April 2014. She was later hired by a woman named Nguyen Thi H. in Thong Nhat District, Pleiku City for a monthly salary of VND3.5 million.

Nhieu said during her time working for H., she was regularly beaten, including with an iron bar, sword, hot iron or hammer. Nhieu also said she suffered a miscarriage when she was five months pregnant due to the inhumane treatment.

According to Vietnam News Agency, Pleiku City police have summoned H., reportedly a drug addict, for questioning.

At the police station, H., whose temper was said to be unstable due to the effects of drugs, attributed her actions to the fact that Nhieu had stolen money several times.

The case is under further investigation.
