A recent survey by TRA found that 51 percent of IT experts in Asia Pacific have begun applying hybrid IT solutions, combining edge computing, public cloud computing and on-premises infrastructure. Edge computing was chosen by more than 1,100 CTOs as the priority task for the next 12 months.

The deployment of edge computing has been going strongly in neighboring markets, according to the report. 79 percent of surveyed institutions in Indonesia have applied edge computing, or have understanding about edge computing. Many of them have been applying edge solutions for advanced projects as well.

Meanwhile, Thai businesses plan to step up the use of edge computing in the next 24 months for customers’ experience-oriented projects.

TRA’s report confirmed the superiority of the positive effects of these solutions. As much as 72 percent surveyed subjects recognized the benfits of the solution in minimizing IT costs, 46 percent found efficiency in minimizing operation costs, and 34 percent found efficiency in increasing customers’ satisfaction.

Challenges

While edge computing can bring great benefits, IT experts pointed out that a lot of problems still exist in the technology deployment.

Ensuring security remains a difficulty as the IT area is not always protected, and the rack system often does not have a locked door. In addition, the rack cabinet system is not well organized, resulting in chaotic cable system arrangement, thus obstructing the airflow in rack cabinet and increasing the possibility of people’s mistkaes when adding, moving or making changes.

The absence of backup systems such as power solutions (Uninterruptible Power Supply - UPS, and Power Distribution Unit - PDU) also reduces system availability during maintenance. The IT department also relies on the building's cooling system. The lack of dedicated cooling equipment can cause the equipment inside to overheat.

In addition, these systems often do not have a DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) system or dedicated staff or software to monitor assets and avoid downtime.

Solutions

Morgan Duarte from Schneider Electric IT Vietnam said that edge computing is the key to open the door to the future, but enterprises need to take strategic steps during information infrastructure restructuring to optimize the strength of the solution.

He said in order to gain success in edge computing, businesses should focus on endurance, ensure security during operation, and maintain long-term sustainability.

Experts believe that in order to run a data center as edge, it is necessary to focus on improving the micro data center, management software and maintenance services.
