Phu Bai attracts flights from Cambodia, Laos, Japan and China which will have to use other international airports.

Viet Nam's Central Airport Authority will oversee the repairs.

In 2020-30 it is planned to increase the airport's capacity to 4000 passengers an hour and to receive 200,000 metric tonnes of goods and products a year.

By 2030 the airport should be able to receive large aircraft such as the A320/A321, Boeing 767 and Boeing 777-2002R.

The temporary closure follows decision no 710/QD-BGTVT signed by Minister of Communications and Transport Ho Nghia Dung.
