VietNamNet Bridge - The water levels in the Huong and Bo rivers in Thua Thien-Hue Province were approximately at the 3rd alarming level yesterday, causing flooding in Hue City, Quang Dien district and Huong Tra town. The flood was caused by heavy rains and water discharged from hydropower reservoirs in the region.

A school girl died in the flood on her way to school yesterday afternoon in Thua Thien Hue Province. Tran Thi Thanh Nhon, 16, was swept away by strong flood currents in Quang Dien District. She was in the water with three other schoolmates, whom were saved by local residents.

Her body was found several hours later. Authorities in the province had warned people in flood-prone areas about the heavy rains and rising waters in the Huong and Bo rivers.

However, unexpected high volume water discharges from local Huong Dien and Binh Dien power reservoirs had worsened the situation. People in the lowland were not properly prepared because the floods came too fast, with strong flows in many areas.

Schools have not been reformed for shutdown as well. Local authorities are working with the reservoirs mangers to prevent further uncontrolled high volume water discharges.
