Hue City will move abandoned sculptures at local public places to parks along the Huong River, according to the director of the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Phan Tien Dung.

The move was made following news that 100 sculptures in the city had been stolen or seriously deteriorated.

Hue held five international sculpture camps in 1998, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008, producing 140 works. Most of the pieces were put on display at public parks. However, many of the pieces have disappeared and are suspected to have been stolen, while others have become seriously damaged.

Dozens of sculptures were installed at Thuy Tien Tourist Resort, but the resort stopped operations more than five years ago, so many of the works have been vandalised. Meanwhile, statues located at the Bavico Resort were actually damaged due to repair and construction of facilities in the resort.

Hue City’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will post information about the statues such as their meaning and their authors. The department will then work with Hue Fine Arts University to select the best for moving to the city centre and repair damaged pieces.

The sculptures are planned to taken to Bui Thi Xuan Park and another park on Kim Long Street. The relocation will be done from now to the beginning of 2017.
