Gold diggers destroy Thua Thien-Hue’s district
This is a hill of two-year old keo trees owned by Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tron’s family in Loc Son district. Tron said that the first gold diggers from Thai Nguyen province appeared on his hill on June 23. After these people discovered gold there, nearly 1,000 gold diggers have flocked to this hill to dig gold.
These people have chopped lots of keo trees to dig holes of 5-10 meters deep on the hill. They have also transported a huge volume of soil by truck away from the hill, Tron said.
“Gold diggers from Nam Dong district dug up a lot of gold. They gave me VND5 million ($250) as gift,” she added.
Local authorities are trying to stop gold diggers to destroy the trees, the hill and transport soil away.
Earlier, thousands of people from northern and central province flocked to a hill in Loc Son commune, Phu Loc district, Hue city to explore gold illegally. They destroyed a vast area of forest before being driven away by local forces.
