VietNamNet Bridge – A trench of the Nam Pong Hydro-power Plant in Quy Chau district of the central province of Nghe An suddenly collapsed on the afternoon of August 19, burying a group of seven workers, including foreigners.


According to the local government, rescue workers found out five victims.  Two of them were dead while the three others were in critical condition.

Rescue workers are digging to find the remaining victims.

At the time the accident occurred, the conductors were setting mines.

The construction of Nam Phong hydro-power plant was kicked off in 2010, at the cost of VND750 billion ($325 million) on Pong River in Quy Chau district, Nghe An province. Its two turbines are provided by Chinese partners.

The work is designed at 30 MW of capacity. It will contribute around 120 million Kwh of power to the national grid once it becomes operational.

The first turbine is scheduled to run from early 2013.

Police are investigating the accident.
