Abalone is one of the rare seafood specialities in the sea of Phu Quoc (Kien Giang). To catch abalones, fishermen have to dive deep into the sea, and separate abalones from the reef. After being processed, one kilo of dried abalones sells for VND11 million ($500).
The price of VND11 million per kilo is for abalones with 9 holes. It is up to VND15 million/kilo for the highest quality abalones.
Restaurants in Phu Quoc also sell “popular” abalones for over VND500,000 ($25) per kilo.
Phu Quoc also has shark fin as its specialty, ranging from VND9 to VND12 million ($400-$600) per kilo.
Large shark fins are priced VND15 million a kilo.
Dried walrus is also an expensive specialty of Phu Quoc, with the average price of VND100,000/walrut.
