Although Line dancing was introduced to Vietnam only some years ago, it is now becoming popular with Vietnamese youngsters.

Line dancing has been around for a long time but more specifically in the US. In the west, line dancing can be performed on the streets, in parks or at festivals.

The simple steps accompanied by the fun that the dance brings about have made it popular among the young generation.

Hanoi’s Youth Assistance and Development Centre is the first organisation in Hanoi to introduce line dancing and turn it into one of the favourite activities of youngsters.

The Anh, President of the Hanoi Line Dancing Club, said: “Line dancing can provide dancers with physical flexibility and resilience, music sensitivity and interactive skills improvement.

Moreover, line dancing helps increase interaction within a group to attract people’s involvement in collective activities”.

Line dancing usually contains simple sequence steps without fixed rules, depicting normal living, working or festive activities.

There is no age restriction for participants or for styles of music. In Vietnam, line dancing is often associated with songs about Hanoi, the country, the youth or folk songs so it has a diverse beat, from strong and energetic to calm and melodious.

Because line dancing is a group activity that aims at communication encouragement, some visual and audio aids such as eye-catching costumes are used to attract people to take part in the dance.

To date, there are many line dancing competitions held to provide a playground that is healthy, beneficial and mentally proper for Hanoi youngsters and college students.

Line dancing has also spread to major cities and provinces such as Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Quang Ninh, and Bac Lieu.
