Thach Xa commune in Hanoi’s suburban Thach That district has been well-known for many years for its unique traditional craft product – the bamboo dragonfly.

The bamboo-made dragonflies, after being coated with colourful paints and vivid patterns, will be present in both domestic and foreign markets, introducing a unique symbolic image of the Vietnamese countryside to the world.

The simple bamboo dragonflies must go through many complex stages, first from finding the source of bamboo, to splitting, polishing, drilling, painting, and drying them. In particular, the assembling process must be precise to ensure the dragonfly will be perfectly balanced on the sticks tip.

From the past to the present, the delicate wings of dragonfly’s have symbolised the peaceful serenity of Vietnam’s villages; this image has won over the hearts of foreign guests from as far as Japan, the UK, France, the US, Russia, and Sweden.

 

 

A single stick of bamboo can be divided into many small segments depending on the size of the dragonflies the craftsmen want to make.

 

 

It takes the workers a lot of time and effort to make a bamboo dragonfly, as well as precision and a steady hand to keep the dragonfly’s details in harmony.
