VietNamNet Bridge – As many as 36 gold mining tunnels in the central province of Quang Ngai have been demolished by sappers in the last 10 days.
Most of the gold mining tunnels are located in the remote areas in the district of Tay Tra. To reach these gold mines, sappers and police officers have to walk hours, crossing the forest and mountains.
There are two types of tunnels used by illegal gold miners: the vertical pits of about 1m wide and 10 m deep and the horizontal trenches, which are dozens of meters long.
Sappers have to check the trenches and pits carefully before laying the explosive.
Lieutenant Tra Ngoc Du from the Military Command of Quang Ngai province said this was the first time sappers were assigned to destroy such a large number of gold mining trenches.
The sappers and explosives are escorted by policemen because they are threatened by illegal gold miners.
This time sappers used 1.1 tons of explosive to destruct the entire illegal gold mining trenches in the two districts of Tra Quan and Tra Thanh.
