The Hanoi belt road No. 1 has made consecutive records as "the most expensive road in Vietnam". The first record was made in 2006, with the Kim Lien - O Cho Dua section of 1.1 km long, which was costed VND700 million ($35,000)/m. In 2012, another record was identified for O Cho Dua - Hoang Cau section, with a length of 547m and the cost of VND1.4 billion/m ($70,000). In 2015, Hoang Cau - Lang Ha intersection will set a new record when the cost of each meter of road is estimated up to VND2.5 billion ($120,000).
This section, Kim Lien - O Cho Dua, was dubbed the "most expensive road in Vietnam" and even "the most expensive road on the planet" for a total investment of VND733 billion, the average cost of VND700 million/m ($35,000). Up to 81% of the total investment was spent in land compensation, for nearly 56,000 m2 of land of more than 1,000 households.
In 2013, O Cho Dua - Hoang Cau, the following section of the above road, was inaugurated.
Total investment for this 547m section of road is VND810 billion, equivalent to VND1.4 billion per meter.
In early June this year, the next section of this road, Hoang Cau - Lang Ha-Giang Vo intersection was proposed for construction. The estimated cost of each meter of this section is up to VND2.5 billion ($120,000).
Apart from the belt road No. 1 with three “records”, Hanoi has many other expensive roads.
In February 2015, the extended Nguyen Van Huyen Road was inaugurated with a total investment capital of VND696 billion (over $30 million).
This road is 565m long, built at an average cost of VND1.7 billion/m. Seventy percent of the funds were for site clearance.
Also in February 2015, the extended Tran Phu road was completed.
The total investment of this road is VND225 billion, averaging VND0.5 billion/m.
However, to complete this short distance, it took Hanoi up to 20 years since the project was planned.
In late May 2015, the Hanoi Department of Transport proposed the construction of the road from Nhat Tan Bridge to Thanh Nien Road, with a length of 5.53 km and cost of more than VND4,700 billion, equivalent to over VND850 million/m.
