The first gold medals for Vietnam came from the fencing team. Fencers won up to eight gold medals in all categories.

Fencer Tran Thi Len celebrated victory with her coach after winning the gold medal in women’s Epee. The Vietnam national flag flew on the top of the sword.

On the blue track, Anh Vien’s performance was beyond expectation. She brought home eight gold, one silver and one bronze medals. She won medals for 10 out of 11 categories of competition. In addition, the native of the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho made eight records.

After the closing ceremony, Anh Vien was voted by The New Paper (Singapore's most prestigious newspaper) as the most outstanding foreign athlete at the 28th SEA Games. The 19-year-old swimmer broke the 22-year record of Joscelin Yeo (Singapore) at the SEA Games in 1993, with eight individual gold medals.

Vietnamese gymnastics also confirmed the number one position in the region, with nine gold, four silver and four bronze medals. Besides the familiar faces of Ha Thanh, Phuoc Hung, and Dang Nam, new talents like Dinh Phuong Thanh and Le Thanh performed very well at the games.

Le Trong Hinh became the king of speed of Vietnam after winning a gold medal of the men’s 200m, with 20.89 seconds.

Nguyen Thi Huyen won 3 gold medals (two individual, one team) and the results of the individual categories helped her get the card to the Rio de Janeiro Olympic 2016. She broke the SEA Games record in the women’s 400m hurdle. Her team also broke the 24-year-long record of the women’s 4x400m relay. Huyen is called the "queen of athletics" of Vietnam.

The men’s football team left a strong impression on Vietnamese fans, who offered great support for their beloved team.

The team won a bronze medal for Vietnam.
