On August 1, hundreds of people gathered coal to sell at VND2.3 million/ton ($100).
The coal drifting down to the river comes from Coc 6 Coal Factory, located in Mong Duong ward.
The flow is rather swift, and nearly 2 m deep.
Some men dive with sacks in their hands.
On August 1 morning, Mr. Thanh and his family found 300kg of pit-coal, earning VND600,000 ($28).
Many families in Mong Duong ward are homeless after the disaster. They said they must rely on money earned from gleaning coal. They called the coal a “godsend”.
A man is happy to find a big piece of coal.
After just 30 minutes this man had a sack full of coal.
Many women also participate in this hard work.
Loan and her son collected 400kg of coal on August 1 nearly VND1 million.
Many people collected dozens of sacks of coal on August 1.
