"Due to lack of experience, in the first year I lost many breeding oysters since they were swept away to the sea by a great tide. I returned to Khanh Hoa several times to learn more about the breeding techniques. It turned out that to prevent the loss of breeding oysters, breeders have to set nets around the cage," Thanh said.

Breeding oysters are tied to bamboo trees under the water. The food for oysters is larvae, bacteria, small creatures, and diatoms in nature, which are available in the sea of Sa Huynh.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Trinh, deputy chair of Pho Thanh Commune, said, as the prices for oysters were constantly rising, from VND28,000 to VND35,000 ($1.4-1.7)/kg, many households have also bred oysters, earning high profit.

After three months, the breeding oysters are separated from the bamboo trees and bred in trays, made of wood or plastic, covered with nets or with small holes at the bottom to enable the oysters to get food.

The trays of oysters are hung in cages about 30 cm from the water surface. According to Sa Huynh fishermen, breeding oysters requires modest capital, simple farming techniques, low risk, and high profit. The job is good for people of coastal areas and islands.

Every week, oyster cages are cleaned. This is the most important factor for the growth of oysters.
