![]() As of September 17, Japan had opened the market for Cat Chu mango of Vietnam. Mango was the second fresh fruit to be exported by Vietnam to Japan, after dragon fruit in 2009.

According to the Plant Protection Department, it took five years for the agency to meet all Japanese requirements and set up a disease-control process.

Each shipment of mangoes must first undergo a hot steam treatment process. There are five vapour heat treatment facilities in Vietnam, four of them approved by Japan. Mangoes will also be exported to Australia in addition to litchi and longan that are already shipped, while rambutan will be exported to New Zealand, said Hoang Trung, deputy head of the Plant Protection Department.

The Vietnamese Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Pham Binh Dam, recently posted photographs of Vietnamese dragon fruit at a supermarket in Dubai on his Facebook page. Vietnamese dragon fruit with white flesh sold for 14.95 dirhams (nearly $5) per kilo.

At the end of August, the first two tons of Vietnamese longan were shipped to America. Though the number was limited, this was a good sign for Vietnamese farmers.

To be eligible for export, like other fruits, rambutan must meet the Global GAP standards and VietGAP.

The southern provinces of Tien Giang, Vinh Long and Ben Tre are the major rambutan growing areas in Vietnam.
