Since 5 am last Friday, public security forces in coordination with related agencies in all 322 wards and communes have been cracking down on drug addicts at hot-spots, including parks, wholesale markets, bridges and hotels.

On the first day, police found 715 drug addicts, including 643 addicts without a stable residence.

In the first two days of the campaign, nearly 500 drug addicts were sent to two rehabilitation centers in the city for detox treatment and psychological counseling, including Binh Trieu Centre for Addicts and Prostitutes in Binh Thanh District and Nhi Xuan Centre for Vocational Education and Employment in Hoc Mon District.

The city's authorities are determined to send all addicts without a stable residence to rehabilitation centers prior to the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday, said Hua Ngoc Thuan, Deputy Chairman of HCM City's People's Committee.

Rehabilitation centers have invested in facilities, human resources and medicine to receive drug addicts for detoxification and psychology counseling, Thuan said.

The city has more than 19,000 drug addicts, including 12,000 addicts without a stable residence in the city, according to a report issued by the HCM City People's Committee.
