Overpass proposed at Tan Son Nhat airport The authority of Tan Son Nhat airport has proposed the city government build an overpass linking Truong Son Street and the passenger terminals of the airport to help ease traffic congestion on nearby roads. Statistics of the airport showed more than 30,000 vehicles move to and from the airport a day, including over 22,000 cars and 7,000 motorcycles. The total number does not include vehicles of over 10,000 employees of the biggest international airport in Vietnam. Traffic jams have been seen on the streets in front of the airport since end-2014, particularly since Pham Van Dong Street leading to the airport was opened to traffic. Therefore, the airport authority has proposed constructing a flyover from Truong Son Street to the domestic and international terminals of the airport to reduce traffic congestion on the approach streets of the airport. The increasing number of passengers going through the airport has led traffic congestion to worsen on the streets leading to the airport. A lack of public transport links to the airport is also to blame as there is only one bus route linking Ben Thanh Market in downtown HCMC and the airport, resulting in most people using private vehicles and taxis to travel to the airport. Tan Son Nhat is designed to handle 25 million passengers per year as envisaged in a new detailed zoning plan for the airport until 2020 with a vision towards 2030 approved by the Ministry of Transport last week. To reduce traffic congestion, the plan is envisaged developing an overpass connecting Bach Dang and Truong Son streets. The city government is looking for funding to implement a pre-feasibility study for a two-kilometer metro line linking Cong Hoa Station of Metro Line No. 5 and Tan Son Nhat airport. VNS |
