India and Vietnam have signed a memorandum of understanding for supporting augmentation of high performance computing in Vietnam.

Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), the Indian government will set up a state-of-the-art and modern upgradable supercomputing facility known as PARAM at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

The $1 million project will be funded by India. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of India, will implement the project on a turn-key solution basis.

The project will serve as a key technology resource for economic growth, environmental understanding and scientific and engineering research in Vietnam

The facility will include a system area network, networking equipments, primary and secondary storage, operating system, software, library and development tools. The Indian side will impart training to the Vietnamese side to create a pool of skilled professionals for pursuing research and development in the area of high performance computing (HPC) and promote use of HPC systems in other applications.

The Supercomputer and the related facilities will be used for varied applications for training, academic and research purposes in areas such as computational simulation and modeling, weather forecasting, disaster management and bio-informatics.

Over the years, India has supported several projects in the field of Information and Communications Technology in Vietnam aimed at capacity-building and human resources development. Last year, C-DAC set up the Vietnam-India Advanced Resource Centre in Information and Communications Technology in Hanoi at a cost of $2 million.

A number of private Indian IT training companies such as NIIT and APTECH have also set up a wide network of IT training centres in several cities in Vietnam.
