An Indian captain was rescued off Da Nang after he suffered a heart attack yesterday.

Captain Chatterjee Tuhindra Nath, 58, with Indian nationality, is rescued by the Maritime Co-ordination and Rescue Centre No 2 in Da Nang. He had a heart attack on the way from China to Singapore on Monday night.

The Da Nang-based Maritime Co-ordination and Rescue Centre number two (MRCC2) said a rescue and search ship was sent with two doctors, 160 nautical miles off Da Nang, at midnight on Monday. The ship then took Chatterjee Tuhindra Nath, 58, to the centre's port by 11.30am today.

Chatterjee, who is the captain of the Hanjin California ship (of Liberia), suddenly suffered a heart failure when his ship was on its way from China to Singapore.

The rescue ship met the Hanjin California ship about 6am today and gave him first aid.

Chatterjee, lying on a stretcher, was in stable condition.

"I'm okay now. Thanks so much. I hope to be well again soon," Chatterjee told Viet Nam News at the port.

The Indian captain is being treated at the city's General Hospital.
