VietNamNet Bridge – The volume of industrial solid wastes discharged daily is estimated at over 13,000 tons across Viet Nam.

The majority of industrial wastes mainly come from light, chemical, metallurgy industries; craft villages; and illegal imported scraps.

Police of the Northern city of Hai Phong said they have discovered nearly 2,300 containers containing 37,000 tons of lead batteries illegally imported at the city’s seaport from 2003 to 2006.

Between 2008 and 2009, Hai Phong’s police also detected other 340 containers of waste, lead battery scraps, and microelectronics.

Illegally imported scraps are attributed to the lack of comprehensive legal system. Meanwhile, industrial wastes keep rising but collection and treatment efforts have failed to meet the requirements.

In addition, industrial establishments have not paid due attention to the collection and treatment of industrial solid wastes and treatment technologies.

Treatment facilities are scattered, thus management has not been efficient.
