Vietnam striker Nguyen Xuan Son was selected for a doping test alongside captain Nguyen Hoang Duc after the team’s 1-0 win over the Philippines in its FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 opener, despite suffering a calf tear that has ruled him out of the rest of the tournament.

Tournament organizers tested players from both teams after the match. Xuan Son and Hoang Duc, both members of Vietnam’s leadership group, were chosen to provide samples. The selection was random, and Xuan Son was required to complete the procedure despite his injury.

The striker had gone down in pain in the 60th minute. After receiving medical attention, he was unable to continue and limped off, with Nguyen Hai Long replacing him. A subsequent diagnosis found a calf muscle tear that is expected to keep him out for at least one to two months.

Vietnam’s opening victory brought three points for coach Kim Sang Sik’s side, but losing Xuan Son is a significant setback. The Thep Xanh Nam Dinh forward scored five goals at the ASEAN Cup 2026, sharing the top scorer award with Nguyen Dinh Bac.

“Xuan Son is a key player in our lineup, but the team has other options. The other players will fill the gap he leaves,” Kim said.

Vietnam must now adjust its attack ahead of a match against Thailand at 7:30 p.m. on September 29, an important test in its bid to reach the FIFA ASEAN Cup final.
