VietNamNet Bridge – Initial inspections at around 30 per cent of over 1,500 gas shops in the capital reveal that half are in violation of fire prevention regulations, according to a municipal report.

The inspections were initiated following recent gas explosions across the city.
The latest explosion, at a private gas shop in Tu Liem District last Sunday, killed a woman and her eight-month-old baby, trapped on the second floor, while injuring three others. A gas leak has been blamed for the event.
Inspections, kicked off last month, focus on fire prevention and fighting conditions at gas shops and their operation registration.
“Private gas shops are required to have a minimum business floor area of 12sq.m, at least two exits and a safe electrical system,” Thieu said.
“Shops are not allowed to be used as living areas, which may cause danger in case of gas related incidents.”
“While roofs could be used as emergency escape routes, many shops have been converted into multi-storey dwellings, cutting off escape,” he added.
Any gas shop found in violation of fire prevention regulations would be strictly punished, Thieu said, adding that shop owners could even have their operation licences revoked.
The department regularly warns local citizens to follow fire prevention regulations while instructing district authorities to increase fire prevention inspections, particularly in densely populated areas to minimise risk, he said.
Department statistics show that 15 gas-related explosions have taken place in the city since early 2011, killing at least four people and injuring scores more.
